Brendan Rodgers flashed those brand-new teeth, accompanied with a snort of happy incredulity, when he was asked whether Liverpool could reassess their targets, on the back of their best start to a season since 1994, and actually try to win the title. His laughter recognised the knee-jerk element to the question but he did point out that since the last time these sides met in January, they had both played 19 times in the league – and Liverpool were two points better off.

They were quicker to the ball, stronger in the challenge. More than anything, they seemed to have a superior understanding of this fixture, especially in the opening 45 minutes, and of how to balance all the energy and drive and togetherness that accompanies these occasions with a sense of control.

In an attempt to change the game, Villas-Boas sent on Jermain Defoe and the Argentinian Erik Lamela. Arsenal, however, had to resort to sending on full-backs for reinforcement in attacking midfield positions.

Wenger could interpret this game as a vindication of his methods, or a reminder that adding to the squad on the last day of the transfer window should be compulsory, not optional. The players who give their all for him deserve that back-up.

"I think United will carry on as usual because they have the same great players," says the Liverpool midfielder. "Only the manager is new and I'm sure they want to win as much as they ever did. They have big players. Just because they have changed managers does not mean they have lost their way. We want to make up for the time lost and want to get back at them and winning this match will help us do that. We feel exactly the same as they do about this game."

With another incendiary figure from the fixture's history absent on Sunday, the suspended Luis Suárez, Coutinho is central to Liverpool's prospects of a victory that could reverberate throughout their season. From his full debut in a 5-0 defeat of Swansea City, the £8.5m January recruit from Internazionale has brought greater purpose, invention and penetration to Liverpool's attacking play under Rodgers.

Moyes is unsure how the experience will differ to a Merseyside derby. "I don't know, because I've not been involved in one yet," he said. "But everyone tells me about the rivalry between Liverpool and United. I'm looking forward to it. It's the sort of game I came here to be involved in."

Liverpool have won their opening two league games of Brendan Rodgers' second season and Moyes added: "I think Brendan is building his team and changing things around the way he wants them to be. But Liverpool has always been a great football club, always challenging for trophies in the years gone past. So Brendan's at a great club."

Mourinho is acting as educator these days, his frequent reminders this is a young squad – certainly when compared to Bayern Munich's seasoned champions – serving to underline the long-term nature of the project he has assumed at Stamford Bridge second time round. That many of this team were at the club when Roberto Di Matteo's side oversaw victory in the elite competition at the Allianz Arena in 2012 hardly matters. This is about readjusting after last season's success in the lesser competition: a wake-up call before the confrontations with Schalke, Basel and Steaua Bucharest to come, even if the last two of their Champions League group opponents were actually beaten en route to the lesser trophy last season.

Defoe has been a substitute in Tottenham's two Premier League games so far, both of which were settled by goals from Soldado, but he took the opportunity presented by the visit of Dinamo Tbilisi to show he is still sharp. Admittedly, the Georgian champions provided flimsy resistance and were already five goals down from last week's first leg, but Defoe took his chances well. The first came in the 39th minute, when he collected a neat pass from the impressive Lewis Holtby and thrashed the ball into the net from 18 yards. The second, which followed soon after, was a predatory tap-in after good work by Tom Carroll.

Arsenal remain in talks with their former midfielder Mathieu Flamini over a return to the club as a free agent. But Theo Walcott has denied that Arsenal have fallen behind their rivals Tottenham, whom they meet in the derby at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

He said: "Not at all. I feel we're very strong. Everyone makes out our squad is very weak and there are not many of us but we showed in the last few games that we can bounce back from a bad result, proving a lot of people wrong.

"Every club is different and Tottenham invested their money very well. For us players we just want to do a job on Sunday, we don't care if they have brought in £30m stars. They have some very good players and a very good manager but we need to make sure we focus on ourselves. The way we're playing at the moment we believe we can beat anyone.

Commons collects the ball jsut outside the box and sneaks as canny pass through to Stokes, who fires it across the face of goal. Shakhter stick it behind for a corner. The initial delivery it clear but Celtic work it back out to Commons, who curls it into the centre. Lustig rises and bops a fine header towards the net … but Mokin pulls off a superb save, stretching to tip it over the bar to the incredulity of the watching hordes!

Business as usual on the first two point as Federer rattles to 30-0, then Zemlja finds a return to Federer's first serve for the first time to take the next point and at 40-15 Federer misjudges a winner into an open court and we're as close as we've been on his serve at 40-30. Federer remembers himself though and pulls Zemlja around the court briefly on the next exchange before closing out the game. First small signs of progress for Zemlja on the Federer serve though.

Zemlja plugging away her and moves to 30-15, putting away a neat winner on the third point with Federer stranded. Then a decent serve takes him to 40-15, before we get a little glimpse of old school Federer, as he runs into the net to send a neat angled volley to his left and close the gap t0 40-30. Zemlja takes the next point. He needed that. He'd kept pace with Federer in the opening six or so games and suddenly he was down a set and a break. What can he do from here?

In the middle order, whether Michael Clarke wants to bat at No4 or No5 remains to be seen but, if the top three can score some runs, it makes where he bats a null-and-void issue really. And then you've got Steve Smith, after a confidence-boosting maiden Test century at The Oval, coming in at No5. I'd prefer to see Brad Haddin down at No7 rather than six, so I still don't think the Australian batting line-up is set by any stretch of the imagination – and that No6 spot could be up for grabs.

Mike Tyson has claimed he is on the verge of dying from ongoing drug and alcohol problems.

"I wanna live my sober life. I don't wanna die. I'm on the verge of dying, because I'm a vicious alcoholic," the former heavyweight boxing champion said on ESPN's Friday Night Fights.

Just in case anyone has lost sight of the fact in all the excitement, England, having scored 215 runs from 98.3 overs in the day, still need a further 46 runs to avoid the possibility (probability even given the weekend weather forecast) of following on. If they do that, then the match could be all but moribund.

From the moment Clarke won the toss and chose to bat, Australia have had the upper hand in this match. This is not a good Test pitch, in that once the new ball goes softer it offers precious little to the pacemen, even those who really bend their backs, but neither does it help strokemakers beyond putting away half-volleys or long hops. Certainly felicitous touches, even from Bell, who has exhibited more than his fair share in this series, have been out of the question.

By late afternoon, as the sky began to fill in optimistically pewter in colour, each run was being cheered. Boundary futures were soaring on the Stock Exchange as shrewd investors piled in before it closed for the holiday. When Pietersen hit the first boundary in 14 overs, his fourth, to reach his slowest ever Ashes half-century, from 124 balls, there was close to uproar: novelty has its value. When, on Pietersen's demise to Mitchell Starc shortly afterwards, Chris Woakes then drove his first ball in Test cricket handsomely to the square cover boundary, it might have been a World Cup winner at Wembley or VE Day with hats thrown in the air.

These were the crumbs of comfort on which a sell-out crowd were fed.

Moscow and Beijing have consistently backed Assad throughout the civil war, and the Russian foreign ministry on Wednesday accused rebels of staging the massacre to trigger intervention. China issued a statement saying it opposed the use of chemical weapons, but called for the UN team to "fully consult with the Syrian government and maintain an objective, impartial and professional stance, to ascertain what really happened".

The opposition Syrian National Coalition has said the Ghouta attack was just the latest in a series of chemical weapons atrocities, and joined international calls for Sellström's investigators to be given immediate access. The area was reported to be still under sustained Syrian army bombardment on Thursday.

The Turkish foreign minister, Ahmet Davutoğlu, declared that the apparent gas attack crossed "all red lines" and criticised international inaction, as well as the UN security council, which he said "has not even been able to take a decision".

On Wednesday, the security council expressed "strong concern" and called for more "clarity" on the use of chemical weapons, but Russia and China insisted on the watering down of a tougher approach backed by the US, UK, France and 32 other governments that called on the UN investigative team already in Damascus to be allowed immediate access to the site of the attack, and to be granted greater latitude by the Syrian government to carry out their enquiries.
